Daniel Brady

Case study

"The saying you only get out what you put in is useful to keep in mind before taking part in the programme. I found the programme highly beneficial, but your progress at points can be pretty self-driven so it is a good idea to get involved in as many projects you can throughout your year."

Daniel Brady Trainee Power Engineer at SP Energy Networks

Name: Daniel Brady

Organisation attended: SP Energy Networks

Job title: Trainee Power Engineer

Location: Lanarkshire

Duration: One Year

How/why did you apply and how did you prepare?

In order to prepare for the programme, I set myself goals and targets in a development plan of what I was looking to achieve and gain throughout the year and I made sure I was continually making reference to this plan throughout my year in order to monitor my progress.

What did you do?

I gained valuable on site knowledge and experience and allowed me to get out and see the electrical network. Throughout my year I spent time in different departments working on a variety of projects and then delivering the information to other people in the business or company contractors.

What did you gain from the experience?

I have found the programme very useful as it gave me invaluable work experience and people skills that I would use throughout my everyday life. In university a lot of the information may come from books, but by getting out on site and seeing some of the information first hand on the network prior to my degree was highly valuable and helped me in my own understandings.

Top tips

Any business should utilise the chance to get these students involved in as much projects as possible, as well as potentially providing some on the job experience.

In what ways has the experience had an impact on your career path/ambitions?

My work experience has benefited me in my studies as well as my work career. The knowledge and information gained from my Year in Industry has been very useful and I have gained skills that I shall use every day in my day to day life.
