Case study

“This has been greatly beneficial to me in both my personal life as well as my professional life.”

Matthew Snowdon Applications Engineer/ Inside Sales Representative

Name: Matthew Snowdon

Organisation attended: National Instruments UK & Ireland

Job title: Applications Engineer/ Inside Sales Representative

Location: Newbury

Duration: One Year

How/why did you apply and how did you prepare?

I initially heard about what this company had to offer from a friend who was two years ahead of me, studying the same degree course. After applying online I had a phone interview and attended an assessment day before I was offered a place.

What did you do?

I have found my placement experience to be invaluable. I put my skills into practice and learnt how a multinational business operates. For example, I gained an insight into how office-based engineers interact with engineers in the field and similarly with offices in other countries. In addition, I personally gained a lot from speaking directly with customers as it was noticeably beneficial to my level of confidence in the workplace. I frequently found myself in situations that brought me out of my comfort zone. Notably, I had the chance to contribute to the success of several customer events up and down the country. I taught a three-day course to a class of industrial customers.

What did you gain from the experience?

My placement year has given me the confidence, both in my technical and social skills, to make the most out of my university education. I gained a wide range of knowledge as a result of speaking to customers in a range of different fields.

Top tips

I researched the town where the office is based, in order to get to know my working environment in a wider context.

In what ways has the experience had an impact on your career path/ambitions?

This helped me to consider the path of my future career and which particular areas I would like to specialise in.
