Shannon Naylor Industrial Trainee

Name: Shannon Naylor

Organisation attended: Mott MacDonald

Job title: Industrial Trainee

Location: York

Duration: 1 year

How/why did you apply?

I came across Mott MacDonald when searching online. I was drawn to the company’s ethics and values which are widely recognised and contribute to the company’s worldwide success.

I was yet to decide what area of electrical engineering I wanted to go into and the multi-disciplinary nature of Mott MacDonald added to its appeal.

What did you do?

I was accepted for a placement in Mott MacDonald’s rail team. I have been involved in various projects, taking on responsibility to carry out tasks on my own. I have been introduced to a wide range of disciplines.

What did you gain from the experience?

I have been exposed to an industry I was not familiar with before and been able to network and engage with professionals. During my placement I have experienced working as a team and being responsible for my own work.

In what ways has the experience had an impact on your career path/ambitions?

I feel that the level of preparation I have gained ahead of graduation from university is invaluable. The actual work experience has shown me where I need to develop my knowledge. I now have improved job prospects and I am a step closer to attaining my electrical and electronic engineering degree.

Top tips

I think a placement should be structured to incorporate both the company’s needs and the student’s career development goals. A variation of work as well as exposure to different parts of the business is beneficial for both the student and the company
